Emergency Contact Name(Required)

Boat Use

We are excited to offer students the use of our fleet of 14ft small boats.*
All boat operators must have the following before coming to BMSC.
  1. Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC)
  2. A valid 2-day (16 hour) Marine Basic First Aid + CPR-C, or a valid First Aid + CPR-C certificate recognized by a province or territory (e.g. Red Cross, St. John's). ‘In-person’ or ‘blended’ courses that meet the above criteria are acceptable.

Boating experience is recommended but not necessary. You will be required to present your First Aid and PCOC certifications prior to using BMSC boats. Mandatory boat orientation/training is provided to boat operators. Students will be given the opportunity to practice their skills prior to being given permission to take the boats outside the nearby inlet.
*Student boat use and training is not included in the courses Subtidal Science, Terrestrial & Freshwater Conservation, In Pursuit of the Whale, or Science Communication.
Do you wish to operate BMSC motorboats?(Required)
If you answered yes above, do you have any previous experience operating motorboats?

Housing

Note: Student housing is planned based on the BMSC's Field Safety Plan.
Summer students live in the Buchanan Lodge, a co-ed dormitory building featuring shared, same-gender rooms (2-4 students per room) and shared bathroom facilities (3-4 bathrooms per floor).

Gender (for room assignment)(Required)

e.g. Do you want to be assigned to the same room as a friend? Do you have medical or accessibility needs that would impact your housing?

Meal Plan and Dietary Restrictions

Meals are served three times a day at our on-site cafeteria. Our cafeteria offers three meal plans: meat, vegetarian, and vegan.
Please indicate your choice of meal plan below. You will be expected to take the food prepared for the plan you selected at all meals. You may change to a different meal plan at a later time if needed.

Meal Plan(Required)

Please list any allergies or dietary restrictions.
Our cafeteria is a peanut-free facility, and staff are happy to provide dairy-free and gluten-free food. However, the BMSC is unable to guarantee support for other life-threatening, anaphylactic, airborne allergies, and cannot guarantee that the BMSC cafeteria is free from cross-contamination of allergens.

The BMSC may request that dietary restrictions be accompanied by a note from a doctor. If your dietary restrictions are for religious reasons, please mention that here.

Pertinent Medical Conditions

Bamfield is a remote community. The closest doctor and hospital are in Port Alberni, two hours away by logging road. In the event of an emergency, evacuations by boat/helicopter are possible but response times are dependent on weather. For non-emergency medical care, Bamfield has a small health centre staffed by a nurse. For these reasons, the BMSC takes student medical conditions very seriously.

Please share any pertinent pre-existing medical conditions (or else type 'none' in the required field). This information is entirely confidential and will be disclosed solely to our First Aid officers and instructional staff during your course.

Examples of pertinent medical conditions we need to know about includes but is not limited to: Serious allergies, diabetes, epilepsy, mobility issues, hearing impairments, issues with balance, visual impairments, previous major injuries, recent surgeries, chronic illnesses, and mental health disorders.

Academic accommodations

Academic accommodations reduce barriers and provide different ways of meeting essential course or program requirements. Fulfilling these essential requirements of a course or program remains your responsibility.

If you typically require academic accommodations such as additional time for writing exams, please ensure you are registered with your home university to access accommodations particular to your campus. It is your responsibility to acquire academic accommodation letters and send them to university@bamfieldmsc.com so we can notify your instructors of your accommodation needs. The BMSC is not able to support academic accommodations without sufficient prior notice. Tell us about your accommodation needs as soon as you can.

Please complete this form by April 17, 2026.

We look forward to seeing you this summer!
