Request for proposals
The Bamfield Marine Science Centre is seeking proposals from qualified companies for the BMSC Housing Project specified in this Request for Proposals (RFP).
FAQs
Is there a detailed site map?
While we do not have a detailed site map of BMSC, here is a map of the property with the proposed location for the housing. BMSC has room to expand at the proposed site.
A geotechnical assessment, including three test pit logs adjacent to the housing site, was completed by McElhanney and Bowerman Excavating in November 2022 during the construction of a modern wastewater treatment plant on the property (owned by Huu-ay-aht First Nations).
Are site visits permitted prior to bidding?
Yes, site visits can be arranged for anyone interested with Marie Cummings (Head of Guest Services and Station Manager).
Does the BMSC have approval to build?
The ACRD have approved all Building Applications at the marine station and are aware of this project, but we are communicating with them to ensure we have current information.
Have you decided on specific modular housing options?
We do not as yet have exact modular models in mind and most interested in reviewing all options.
What is the vision for the common gathering area?
For the proposed common area facilities, what we have witnessed work best is adequate cooking space and kitchen area in general with storage places for at least 10 people to keep their food supplies. Given the remote nature of Bamfield with limited access to supplies, we generally buy at least a weeks’ worth at a time.
Other needs in the common gathering space include:
- Adequate refrigerator and freezer space
- Cook tops – large counter spaces and large sinks
- Common gathering and dining areas
- Laundry area including space for washers/dryers
- Practical covered space for bicycles Kayaks, surf boards etc.
- A storage room for larger items, suitcases etc.
- Outside water hose
- BBQ area
- Adequate electrical capacity
Pricing format: purchase price and if it includes delivery and set up if that is an option.
The vision is that this housing project is the beginning of the BMSC community we want to build, and it should be reflective of who we are and hope to be, and of course, be cost sensitive as we are a charitable entity.
