The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) and Niki Wilson present this science communication workshop that will empower scientists and science students to effectively communicate their research and science to the world around them.
Instructor Niki Wilson will guide students through the how, when, and why of mastering science communication to public audiences through different mediums. This workshop also explores how to navigate the ever-changing communication landscapes and technologies in order to effectively communicate science to inspire and engage audiences, and help foster data-driven and science-backed change in our world.
Major learning outcomes from this workshop will be:
• An understanding of the many modes and formats of science communication.
• A preliminary understanding of how to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible language for diverse audiences, including policymakers, funders, journalists, specific communities, and the general public.
• An understanding of what makes a science story compelling and potentially newsworthy.
• Critical thinking about the structure and content of science communications in an era of increasing misinformation.
• Practice with public speaking and hosting/moderating conversations about science to maximize opportunities at conferences, faculty meetings and other venues.
• Preliminary building blocks for a career in science communication.
