Dr. Gary Anderson and his lab from the University of Manitoba have been at BMSC studying Pacific Spiny Dogfish, a small shark species that inhabits coastal waters throughout the northern Pacific Ocean. They are conducting physiological experiments to understand its role in dogfish life history, behavior, ecology, and conservation.
While Pacific Spiny Dogfish are not endangered, many shark species throughout the oceans are. Studying the physiology of “ancient fishes” like sharks may shed light on their ability to evolve in response to ongoing environmental changes due to the climate crisis.
