The Pacific Marine Science Alliance (PMSA) is a national charitable society established over 50 years ago by the Universities of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Victoria and Simon Fraser University. The society works nationally and international to advance marine science education and research.  PMSA owns and operates at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) in Bamfield BC, western Canada’s largest marine science and education facility. The PMSA is seeking dedicated and visionary individuals to join our Board of Directors as independent directors.

 

About the Role

As a volunteer Board Member, you will play a key role in guiding the strategic direction and governance of our organization. You will work alongside a passionate team to help amplify the voice of marine science research and education.

This is a volunteer position, ideal for individuals who want to give back by supporting a cause that matters deeply — now and for the future.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight and strategic guidance
  • Champion our mission and help expand our reach
  • Support advancement, development, partnerships, and public engagement
  • Attend quarterly board meetings (virtual or hybrid)
  • Contribute to board committees as needed

 

Who We are Looking For

We welcome individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We are especially interested in candidates who bring expertise in:

  • International ocean science and policy leadership
  • Government relations with Ottawa connections
  • Business/marine industry innovation
  • International Engagement
  • Legal and risk management
  • Engineering/Facilities management
  • Real estate development/Properties Trust
  • Advancement and Development/Communications
  • Data governance and cybersecurity

 

Board Term & Commitment

  • 3 year term
  • Approximately 4 Board meetings annually (up to two in-person meetings a year, typically one in Vancouver and one in Bamfield)
  • Additional time as needed for committee participation or special projects
