For over 50 years, the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) has supported education and research on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Our mission is to inspire transformational relationships with the ocean through science. BMSC delivers immersive, hands-on learning experiences for students of all ages, supported by access to rich coastal ecosystems and strong partnerships with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations.

Position Overview

The Cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, presenting, and serving high-quality meals in accordance with approved menus, standardized recipes, food safety standards, and production schedules. The Cook maintains assigned work areas, ensures sanitation standards are met, and works collaboratively with the kitchen team to provide safe and efficient food service for students, researchers, staff, and guests.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Food Preparation & Production: 

  • Prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, baked goods, and special dietary meals.
  • Follow standardized recipes and portion standards.
  • Maintain food quality, consistency, and presentation.
  • Ensure meals are completed according to service schedules.
  • Assist with production planning and preparation for future service.

Food Safety & Sanitation: 

  • Follow FoodSafe, HACCP, Island Health, and BMSC food safety requirements.
  • Maintain proper food temperatures throughout production and service.
  • Label, date, rotate (FIFO), and store food correctly.
  • Complete required food safety records and temperature logs.
  • Report food safety concerns or equipment failures immediately.
  • Clean workstations, equipment, utensils, floors, drains, refrigerators, freezers, and storage areas.

Required Qualifications

  • FoodSafe Level 1 Certification.
  • Experience in commercial or institutional food production.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, and statutory holidays as operationally required.
