Position Title: Maintenance Worker (Full-Time)

Rate of Pay: $27.04 per hour (Probationary rate: $25.67 per hour, per CUPE Collective Agreement)
Hours: Full-Time (37.5 hours/week); part-time and casual availability may be considered

Position Summary

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager and working under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance duties across the buildings, grounds, and equipment at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. This role supports the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the facility.

Key Responsibilities

General Maintenance

  • Perform routine repairs and maintenance on buildings and furnishings (e.g., door closers, window fasteners, gutters).
  • Install lock cylinders, secure furniture and fixtures to walls or floors.
  • Build or repair decks, stairs, and roofs.
  • Install and repair drywall, flooring, and perform both interior and exterior painting.

Vehicle Support

  • Check and top up fluids (e.g., gas, oil, battery levels).
  • Change wheels, clean vehicles, and perform minor non-mechanical repairs.
  • Maintain vehicle service records; deliver and retrieve vehicles for service.

Mechanical & Utility Systems

  • Conduct routine checks on mechanical systems, replacing filters and traps as needed.
  • Maintain sewage treatment systems, wells, and water systems.

Electrical Assistance

  • Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Provide support to electricians, including fastening conduit, pulling cables, and checking fire alarm systems.

Plumbing Maintenance

  • Unclog toilets, floor or basin drains; adjust and maintain basic plumbing fixtures.
  • Assist with minor plumbing installations and basic fabrication.

Groundskeeping

  • Maintain exterior grounds, including mowing, brush cutting, and debris removal.
  • Maintain road surfaces and walkways, including resurfacing, snow removal, and power washing.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with the fabrication of minor scientific equipment (e.g., aquaria).
  • Load/unload vehicles and boats; transport materials across the site.
  • Clean and organize workshop, storage yards, and equipment areas.
  • Ensure safe working conditions at all times.
  • Perform other related duties as required within the scope of the position.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a maintenance role, preferably in a remote camp environment.
  • Red Seal certification in carpentry, electrical, plumbing or HVAC is considered an asset.
  • OFA Level 1 certification.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License (clean driver’s abstract required).
  • Valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card or the ability to obtain.
  • Experience training and mentoring apprentices towards Red Seal certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with staff, guests and contractors at all levels.
  • Ability to work varying work schedules, including weekends/evenings on short notice is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • General knowledge of building materials and maintenance practices.
  • Physically capable with the strength, coordination, and stamina to perform manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • High level of manual dexterity.
