Position Overview
BMSC is hiring a Kitchen Helper to join our dynamic kitchen team. Under supervision, Kitchen Helpers perform routine duties related to food preparation, serving, and cleaning. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone with a positive attitude, good hygiene habits, and a willingness to support daily kitchen operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Wash, clean, and prepare vegetables and fruit for cooking and salads.
- Mix juices and salad dressings as assigned.
- Portion desserts and prepare sandwich fillings.
- Transport food, supplies, and equipment between kitchen, dining areas, and storage.
- Refill drink dispensers and stock condiments and food in service areas.
- Dispense food and beverages to guests as needed.
- Clean equipment, work areas, and dining surfaces; sweep, mop, and sanitize.
- Separate recyclables, dispose of garbage, and manage waste stations.
- Prepare and load dishwashers; sort and stack clean dishes and utensils.
- Assist with take-out meal preparation.
- Perform other duties within the scope of the role as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- FoodSafe Level 1 Certification (or equivalent, e.g., SafeCheck or Food Handler).
- Willing and able to work all shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Able to follow written and oral instructions in English.
- Capacity to learn kitchen routines and safety protocols.
- Cooperative and team-oriented, able to interact respectfully with staff and students.
- Familiar with basic hygiene standards and cleanliness.
- Physically able to stand for extended periods and perform light to moderate lifting.
- Able to safely use standard kitchen appliances and dishwashing equipment.
- Ability to obtain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

- Schedule: Shifts may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Work Environment: On-site, semi-remote coastal location in Bamfield, BC.
- Unionized Role: CUPE Local 401 – members are entitled to benefits as per the collective agreement.
