BMSC Climate Action

Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre Produces Climate Action Series in partnership with
Huu-ay-aht First Nations and Ocean Networks Canada

The BMSC Climate Action Series is funded in part by the Government of Canada

The Bamfield Marine Science Centre (BMSC) is an internationally recognized teaching and research facility located on the West Coast of Canada. In line with our values of partnership, place-based learning, and environmental stewardship, the BMSC Climate Action webinar Series brings cutting-edge ocean research, conservation efforts, and coastal climate issues straight to the public. Using a mixed media approach, our free and interactive series of webinars and workshops covers climate change issues in coastal communities, while highlighting action-based initiatives for every-day people to influence climate solutions.

Join us as we transport you to the coastal waters and temperate rainforests of the traditional territory of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations and engage with climate and ocean experts, indigenous knowledge holders, fishers, scientists, ocean tech companies, and policy makers to uncover the potential of community-based climate action. BMSC’s multimedia suite includes live under-water videography and HD footage that immerses you in an entertaining and educational experience unlike any other.

Each webinar centers around a contemporary theme in ocean and coastal ecosystems, covering topics like kelp forests and restoration, eco-anxiety and climate grief, pacific salmon & two-eyed seeing in fisheries management, science communication, changes in coastal biodiversity, and deep sea & oceanographic changes. Each of the webinar series’ themes highlight the multi-faceted challenges of the climate crisis -and the opportunities for engaging in climate action in your own communities! No matter where you watch this series, we are all connected to the ocean, from the land to sea and back.

To enhance accessibility and inclusivity, the entire high-quality production series is freely available online for educators, scientists, activists, students, industry and the general public through the BMSC YouTube channel.

The next decade is sure to be one of pivotal change, marked by the UN decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and a crucial window of time to prevent catastrophic climate change. In partnership with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations and Ocean Networks Canada, BMSC lies at an intersection of opportunity to bridge world-class research and education with local priorities that explore climate action and focus on solutions that will restore sustainable natural and human ecosystems. The ocean plays a huge role in mediating our climate, and is a big part of the climate solutions movement. This series dives into emerging ocean-climate topics, and even helps connect you with how you can make a difference in the climate solutions movement in your own community.
