I hail from Queen’s University and the freshwater port of Kingston, Ontario, but have a long association with Bamfield and the west coast that dates back to my undergraduate days at the University of Alberta. I became fascinated with life cycles, genetics, developmental and reproductive biology, interests cemented by working as a summer tech with Rich Palmer and taking courses at BMSC. I transitioned to experimental evolution using fruit flies during my PhD at the University of California at Irvine and postdocs in Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, and my lab at Queen’s lab revolves around this model system today. Key research themes include the evolution and developmental biology of sex differences, sexual selection and conflict, and life history evolution.
At Queen’s I developed a popular third year course, Sex & Evolution, dedicated to the evolutionary enigma of sexual reproduction and its extraordinary consequences. A few years ago I decided to try and fulfill a career-long dream of being on the other side of teaching and learning at BMSC and proposed adapting my sex course to the marine coastal environment. I feature numerous local and marine examples in lectures, and with a small class have been able to organize in-depth field trips, hikes, and research projects. Whenever possible, I incorporate material with a human dimension, and favourite outings include visiting the salmon hatchery at Nitinat and snorkelling at The Great Tidepool.
