Give the gift of ocean exploration and discovery
At the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, we are passionate about training the next generation of ocean scientists, educators and stewards. Your investment in BMSC research, teaching and learning supports a vision of life-changing exploration and discovery in the coastal and marine sciences.
On this Giving Tuesday, please consider supporting a diverse community of learners and leaders at the BMSC:
The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre has been operating for over 49 years as a not-for-profit education and research facility located in the traditional territories of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, on the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. Our vision is to create opportunities for life-changing exploration and discovery in coastal and marine environments. We provide highly specialized resources to safely access ocean biodiversity and ecosystems while our teaching labs host impactful university field courses. Our award-winning K-12 Field Trip Program provides our students with multi-day, immersive, STEM educational experiences in nature. We support scientists from around the world who rely on our facility to tackle urgent scientific challenges and to translate knowledge into innovative solutions for sustainable, healthy oceans.
These efforts continue to give young students an unmatched opportunity to make genuine discoveries in ocean science and Canadian biodiversity in this breathtaking region. Our five western university partners provide annual financial support to cover basic administration and operational costs. The rest comes from the programs that we offer, and through generous gifts from people like you. From making a contribution now to existing funds that support student learning (Vancouver Foundation) to investing where the need is greatest (Canada Helps), there are many ways for you to give to support this vision. Every charitable gift makes a difference, and every gift is an investment in the ocean learners and leaders of tomorrow.
Partnerships, science and education will be the catalyst for climate solutions and healthy oceans. Thank you for supporting the BMSC.

Support underrepresented youth experience the ocean environment (CanadaHelps): our public education program builds on common connections to the land and the promotion of natural sciences with place-based learning in the traditional territories of our Huu-ay-aht First Nations partners. 100% of your Donation through CanadaHelps.Org goes to supporting bursaries for youth and schools to attend a field trip and learn about the ocean environment.
We aim to create a convening space to foster innovation in ocean sustainability and climate solutions.
Help a university student cover the costs of a field course in the ocean sciences (Vancouver Foundation): our accredited courses provide hands-on learning, small class sizes, and field research opportunities taught by dedicated, expert instructors. 100% of your donation will be permanently endowed at the Vancouver Foundation to provide scholarships for students.
We aim to increase access and inclusion to the BMSC university field courses by training the next generation of ocean leaders.
Through the W. Garfield Weston Foundation, the Wendy and Leslie Rebanks Bursary supports classes of school-aged children up to grade 8 from BC or Alberta to attend a BMSC field trip. The bursaries are intended to allow students and teachers from under-served schools the opportunity to experience and understand Canada’s marine environment. Contact us to donate to this fund.
We aim to provide public education field trip experiences to underrepresented schools.
Support BMSC directly through your Alma Mater or contact us directly to discuss collaborative ways to make impactful changes for healthy, coastal ecosystems.
